While 'Big Critters' may seem a bit contradictory, what we will examine herein are larger, trucked, internal combustion locomotives, built by the smaller manufactures. We will not get into Alco, Baldwin or EMD, but will include G.E. Some of these locomotives were bought and used on Class I railroads, but we will try to focus on those used by industry, shortlines and government agencies. Many were created to allow one man operation; hence, the 44-45 ton weights. Nearly 70 years of history is being compressed into these pages.
