Description

It was under the guidance of Union Pacific President William Jeffers and Vice President Otto Jabelmann that the railroad developed its finest steam power, the Northern, the Challengers and Big Boy. Then under President A.E. Stoddard and General Supt. Motive Power and Machinery David S. Neuhart, the UP embarked on the turbine and "double-diesel" era. Around 1970, changing U.S. rail operations, such as the proliferation of runthrough trains and pooled power, produced a need for a more standardized locomotive fleet. (The SD40-2 came along in 1972 and essentially produced that standardization. Has it really been 25 years in 1997!) Now, in the 1990s, standardization still is in demand, but big new locomotives are doubling the horsepower!
