Description

The opening of through train service between Boston, Massachusetts, and Albany, New York, in December 1841 enabled New England to become fully competitive with New York City and other eastern seaboard cities which had surpassed the once mighty Boston of seafaring days. Making possible this service were the contiguous routes of the Boston & Worcester Railroad and the Western Railroad, two obvious partners. Although common sense dictated the merger of the two roads, political differences delayed action until September 1867 when the Boston & Albany was formed. Special sections cover eight branch lines; personal reminiscences from former B&A employees in locomotive, freight, & passenger.
Hardcover; Author: Robert Willoughby Jones
