"Could smooth operation be achieved in HOn30?" This was the question that was on the mind of Chris McChesney since the mid 1980's. He had seen the Sango and Flying Zoo ads in the Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette and like many people, had been following the work of HOn30 modelers such as Gary Cerrone, Gerry Hopkins, and of course Dave Frary and Bob Hayden. The concept of using N scale mechanisms to model these diminutive common carriers in HO scale was very appealing to him. However, it seemed that whenever he brought up the subject of HOn30 with HO standard gauge modelers their typical response was "It's too small" or "That stuff...it looks nice...but it doesn't really operate."
